We Participated in the Hydrogen and Lithium Battery Safety Day

On Wednesday, February 12th, ARPA Equipos Móviles de Campaña, a member of our Consortium, actively participated in the Hydrogen and Lithium Battery Safety Day. This important event was organized by the Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón, Bequinor, and supported by the Government of Aragón. The event took place at the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Técnicos Industriales in Zaragoza.

During the event, key professionals from across the value chain of various industrial sectors gathered. The main objective was to present innovative proposals that help improve safety in industrial H2 and lithium battery installations.

One of the notable speakers was Jesús Montero Escuder, an industrial engineer (CPS and TUM-Munich) with a PDD from IESE and a master’s in Renewables and Energy Efficiency. Jesús, who is the head of the Energy and New Developments department at ARPA EMC, shared his expertise and knowledge in gas, fluid mechanics, plant balances, and industrial safety systems.

Additionally, Jesús, as an active member of our Consortium, presented LIFE ZERO ENERGYMOD and demonstrated the project’s results and advances, which is in its final phase. This project is fundamental for promoting safety and innovation in the field of sustainable energy, thus fostering the development of safer and more efficient technologies.

Such initiatives are essential for advancing towards a sustainable and safe future.

New explanatory guide for the LIFE ZeroEnergyMod project available on the website

As we reach the final phase of our innovative project, we are excited to present the new explanatory guide on the PassivHaus standard and its application in modular, transportable, and dismountable construction. This guide, titled “Guide to Applying PassivHaus Standards in Habitable Modules,” has been developed to provide a clear and detailed understanding of the principles and benefits of this efficient building standard.

The guide explains concepts such as the PassivHaus standard and how its basic principles and benefits contribute to energy efficiency, a key aspect of quality construction.

Presentation of the ZEROENERGYMOD Project at European Hydrogen Week

From November 18 to 22, the ZEROENERGYMOD project was enthusiastically showcased at the Hydrogen Foundation of Aragón stand during European Hydrogen Week in Brussels. This event, which brings together leaders and experts in the energy sector, provided the perfect platform to share the significant advancements of our project, which is now in its final stages.

In our space, we had the opportunity to highlight how ZEROENERGYMOD is contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable energy future. Visitors were able to learn firsthand about the innovations and developments we have implemented, as well as the benefits these bring in creating tailored logistical solutions for European military bases, as well as various civil organizations involved in peacekeeping, development, and international cooperation. This includes NGO´s and any public or private entities that need to operate in remote areas.

Participating in this event not only allowed us to showcase our work but also to establish valuable connections with other stakeholders in the sector, exchanging ideas and experiences that will further enrich our project.

 

Visit of Passivhaus Certifier to ZEROENERGYMOD Prototype

On October 25, coinciding with the Spanish Passivhaus Conference in Madrid, the Passivhaus certifier for the ZEROENERGYMOD project visited the prototype to discuss certification aspects. This visit was made possible thanks to our partner, B+HAUS, a pioneering professional firm in Aragón specializing in the design of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings.

Passivhaus buildings combine high indoor comfort with very low energy consumption, pushing energy efficiency to its limits. They achieve minimal energy demand for heating and cooling throughout the year, ensuring excellent indoor air quality and performance that surpasses conventional homes.

The Passivhaus standard is adaptable to any climate, as its requirements focus primarily on energy efficiency, comfort, and health. Appropriate solutions must be implemented to meet these criteria. This standard is a key element and a protagonist in the success of the ZEROENERGYMOD project.

ZEROENERGYMOD shines at the HyDUAR Project Event

On October 16th, the ZEROENERGYMOD module was the focal point of the HyDUAR project event, which focused on the dual applications of hydrogen. This project, coordinated by AERA – Cluster of Aeronautics, Aerospace, and Defense of Aragón and funded by the Instituto Aragonés de Fomento, brought together prominent professionals from the Aragonese industry at the Salesianos Zaragoza facilities.

During the event, a representative from our consortium, ARPA Equipos Móviles de Campaña, presented the technological advancements and challenges we have faced in developing our modular habitable solution, designed for easy transport. This presentation highlighted the multiple applications of hydrogen in both civil and military sectors, emphasizing its potential to transform various industries.

We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who made this event possible, including participants Jorge García – CEO of CONVERZAR, Emilio Sumelzo – Manager at Mecanus, Miguel Ayuso, Miguel Aythami Ayuso Sebastián – Project Manager at AERA, Juan Carlos Andrés – Head of Vocational Training Studies at Salesianos Zaragoza, and Gonzalo Peña – Industrial Engineer at ARPA Equipos Móviles de Campaña. All of them are key figures in the Aragonese industry.

New Scientific Article Published

We have published an article on the ZAGUÁN website of the University of Zaragoza, an Institutional Repository of Documents.

The scientific article titled “Módulos Habitables de Consumo de Energía Casi Nulo para Bases Militares en Entornos NATO” was developed and published by the University of Zaragoza. The authors are proud members of our Consortium and belong to the University Center for Defense at the University of Zaragoza.

This article focuses on the ZEROENERGYMOD project and its innovative solutions for energy-efficient living modules designed for military bases in NATO environments, emphasizing sustainability and minimal energy consumption. It has also been published in the institutional repository of the University of Zaragoza, enhancing its accessibility and impact within the academic community.

Aragon Hydrogen Foundation presents ZEROENERGYMOD project at WHEC

Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, a key partner in the ZEROENERGYMOD project, had the honor of presenting the project’s advancements and objectives at the World Hydrogen Energy Conference (WHEC). Sara Martínez, the Business Development Manager at Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, represented the project to a crucial audience in the hydrogen energy sector.

WHEC is recognized as the premier conference in this field, attracting thousands of attendees from over a hundred countries. It provides a unique platform for exchanging scientific and market information, fostering connections among global leaders in business, government, and the scientific community, all under the auspices of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy (IAHE).

During her presentation, Sara highlighted the goals of the ZEROENERGYMOD project, which aims to promote sustainable and efficient energy solutions that align with current societal and environmental needs. Participation in WHEC underscores the Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón’s commitment to innovation and the development of clean technologies.

This event not only marks a significant milestone for the project but also serves as a platform for future collaborations in the hydrogen energy sector.

Life Zero Energy Mod: Technical day with partners in Aragon Hydrogen Foundation

The Life Zero Energy Mod project continues to make good progress, adjusting the parameters of the hydrogen and renewable energy system to ensure its correct operation. Within this framework, a technical workshop was held with the project partners at the facilities of Aragon Hydrogen Foundation.

Monitoring: Key to the Success of the Habitable Module

Monitoring is a crucial aspect in projects such as Life Zero Energy Mod, as it allows real-time data collection on system performance and the detection of possible anomalies. This information is essential to optimise the operation of the habitable module and ensure its correct maintenance.

Collaboration and Experience Sharing

The technical workshop provided an excellent opportunity for the project partners to share their experience and expertise in hydrogen and renewable system monitoring. Topics such as the selection of suitable sensors, the configuration of data acquisition systems and the analysis of collected data were addressed.

Commitment to Sustainability

The Life Zero Energy Mod project aims to develop a prototype of an energy self-sufficient single-family house, using hydrogen and renewable energies as primary energy sources. This project is aligned with the European Union’s objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Winner of the Energy Globe Award in Spain, the most renowned environmental award in the world

The LIFE ZEROENERGYMOD project has received in Madrid the Energy Globe Award in Spain, in the Air Category, awarded by the commercial office of the Austrian Embassy in our country. This is the most renowned environmental award in the world and brings together almost 200 participants, with initiatives ranging from small and simple ideas to large-scale high-level projects.

The general director of Industrial Promotion and Innovation of the Government of Aragon, Mar Paños, collected the award as Vice-President of the FHa, accompanied by its managing director, Fernando Palacín. The FHa already won this same award in 2020 and its contribution is essential to advance in the development and implementation of innovative solutions in the field of energy.

LIFE ZEROENERGYMOD is capable of revolutionising modular living spaces with a zero-energy mobile module based on the Passivhaus standard, allowing a 75% reduction in energy consumption. Aimed at military bases and remote areas, it drastically cuts energy consumption, saving 5.7 kl/year of diesel, reducing CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions by 15 and 0.33 tonnes per year, respectively, and generating 4 megawatt hours from renewable sources.

The prototype eliminates dependence on fossil fuels by integrating photovoltaics, wind power and a lithium and hydrogen battery storage system. The use of hydrogen as an energy vector is key to the life inside the module, as it allows the module’s energy autonomy to be extended between 20 and 40 days. This project is a pioneer in the use of hydrogen in buildings.

This habitable modular solution is installed and tested in two Spanish Army camps located in Zaragoza and Latvia, in addition to an after-LIFE demonstration at the Gabriel de Castilla Antarctic Base, managed by the Spanish Army, which has an extreme climate where energy management is critical. The project has as partners, in addition to the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation as coordinator, the University Centre of Defence and the companies B-Haus, specialised in PassivHaus construction, and ARPA EMC, with extensive experience in installation, maintenance and design of military and emergency mobile field equipment.

The event, held at the Austrian Embassy in Madrid, was attended by numerous key players from the Spanish and Austrian energy sector, making it a unique opportunity to learn about achievements and future prospects in the field of sustainable energy, as well as to network and share ideas with other leaders in the industry.
